Atrial fibrillation (AFib) |
A brief (!) explanation:
In early May, David came down with the flu. This progressed to pneumonia, which resulted in fluid in the lungs and around the heart, and subsequently episodes of atrial fibrillation ("AFib") and other arrhythmias. The first visit to the hospital ER saw a heart rate of 270 BPM. The AFib resulted in 9 trips to the Squamish Hospital Emergency Room and 3 stays in hospitals totalling 6 nights, with electrical cardioconversion required 4 times. (Squamish General Hospital nurses and doctors are great!) Other heart arrhythmias began soon after.
First drug tries seemed to work, but then didn't. Finally in July/August, we found a drug (amiodarone) that stabilized things. A day surgery procedure is planned sometime in the next year.
In the meantime, David needs to get back in shape....
